Only solid fans of the genre will take to this humorless affair, as Franciscus, assisted by roommate Linda Evans, goes after a Russian named Bluebird, who's very deadly at tossing a star-like weapon. 1 a.m. Channels 3, 4 and 13 The Midnight Special The Electric Light Orchestra hosts the show, performing "'Livin' Thing" and "'Do Ya" on their own, and introducing their guests: Santana, Mary MacGregor, Don McLean and comedian George Miller. 'Hunter' Features Violence By Joan Hanauer NEW YORK (UPI) The opening episode of the new spy series, "Hunter, contains four corpses, no wit and only one beautiful who remains fully clothed at all times what kind of secret agent drama is that? From the looks of the first chapter in the new CBS series, which goes on the air tonight, "Hunter" has a better chance of making the blacklists of the -violence groups than the top of the rating lists. James Franciscus stars as James Hunter, the very model of a modern tall blond secret agent.

He goes unsmiling through the hour with the grim determination of an internal revenue agent. His fellow spy is a wholesome looking blond, played by Linda Evans with intelligence but without style. She also scores low on the laugh meter. The plot is straightforward spy stuff, with some exotic touches added but not integrated into the whole. A man is killed in the Los Angeles Zoo, stabbed to death by a four-pointed star, an Oriental weapon much favored by an Occidental Communist spy called The Bluebird who is a master of disguises and enjoys killing.

The murdered man is a who specialized in finding scientists to fill jobs in atomic industry. More bodies turn up from time to time as Franciscus tries to find Bluebird. No one knows what Bluebird looks like, but Franciscus follows the trail of "death stars" to a nuclear facility. Edward Mulhare as a former agent who specializes in solving puzzles adds British charm, and Ralph Bellamy is barely visible in the opening as he sits in shadows and gives Franciscus his orders by telephone. Those who dream about combining Sean Connery with Diana Rigg in the ultimate spy story better stick to their fantasies.

"Hunter" misses the target. ABC continues to lead the three network league in the Nielsen ratings, and it looks as though James Arness can go back in the saddle any time, if he's of a mind to. "How The West Was Won," a parter in which Arness stars with Eva Marie Saint, led the ratings list for the second week in a row, while CBS's "People's Choice Awards" knocked NBC's latest Best Seller, "Seventh Avenue," out of contention on Thursday night.
