I Mansfield News- Journal Thursday, April 21, 1960 32. Lefty Wins Lively Dusting Duel With Dodgers, 1 0 By MILTON RICHMAN UPI Sports Writer Beanballs already? Yup, and it seems only ural that the two teams firing at each other are the Giants and Dodgers in a prompt early-season attempt to establish who's the boss. The Giants were Wednesday when Southpaw Mike McCormick not only pitched them to a two-hit, 1-0 victory over the Dodgers, but also had the last work in a lively dusting duel with sidearmed Don Drysdale. Drysdale, who allowed only five hits in dropping his first game of the season following two victories, hit Orlanda Cepeda on the head with a pitch in the second inning. Cepeda's helmet saved him on that one.

Then in the sixth, Drysdale stung Willie Mays with a fast (ball on the left forearm. grimaced in pain but trotted down to first base. it top was of the McCormick's seventh. ty turn He didn't waste any time firing his first pitch straight at Wally Moon's head. Moon hit the dirt as the ball whizzed past him and that ended the beanballs for the day anyway.

The victory was McCormick's second, coming after a threehit, 6-1 win over the Cardinals on April 13, and he even helped his own cause at the plate. Willie Kirkland led off the fifth with a single and moved up on an infield out. With two down, McCormick caught Dodger baseman Jim Gilliam flat-footed as he laid down al perfect bunt along the foul line. That sent Kirkland to third from where he scored on Don Blasingame's single. McClain Chosen Crestline Coach CRESTLINE Dave have been hired to guide fortunes at Crestline for Superintendent Jack P.

successful a season as we had last year at Crestline. It was really a pleasure working with those kids they worked hard, they wanted to play, and they played well. "We gave the town the best football its seen in almost 20 years and with eight lettermen and six or eight more veterans back this fall, Crestline should come up with another good team. "I can't help being enthusiastic about the new job, though," the 38-year-old coach continued. "It will present a challenge, building a program from the ground up, and it will be my system and really give me a chance to test my talents to the limit." 3 ASSISTANTS Kennedy will begin work on selection of three assistants Saturday.

After talking with Tusla officials, it seems certain many of the boys enrolled in the new school will have had some football background, some of them in the Massillon system. In three years at Crestline, Kennedy coached teams won 15 games, while losing 11 and tying one. In Mohican League competition, the Bulldogs were 9-3, winning the crown with a 4-0 mark in 1959. Jerry Harbaugh, Kennedy's quarterback last season, led the Mansfield area in touchdown passes with 13 and landed the third team All-Ohio signal-calling berth. Before moving to Crestline, Kennedy tutored Payne football teams to 11 wins in 14 games and coached the trackfield teams there to two county championships.

He served at Celina as assistant in football and basketball for two terms before moving to Payne. Kennedy's scholastic coachling career began at Randolph, where he coached football and basketball for a year, guiding the cage team to the Portage County title in 1952. After starring in athletics at Orrville High, Kennedy played four years of guard for Ashland College. He's married and has a daughter, who is a sophomore in high school. 574 Series Tops Keglers CRESTLINE A 574 series by B.
