"I did it for Brooke and I'd do it again," Robert Edward Matthews, 39, told reporters Tuesday before bis court hearing in Melbourne, Austra-, lia. He is charged with the shotgun robbery of the restaurant in Colling-wood, a Melbourne suburb, Dec.

13. Brooke Matthews received the heart and lungs of 3-year-old child during the transplant performed Monday in London's National Heart Hospital. Her mother, Deborah, 26, visited Brooke Tuesday and said, "She's lovely she's pink from the top of her head to the tips of her toes." Doctors had told Brooke's father that the girl would live only a few months without the operation, and Matthews told the court he was innocent because he was under strain at the time. Newspapers said Matthews was unemployed. "The only reason I did it was because the government would not give me the money to go to England," Matthews told reporters.

Australia has a national health insurance program, but reimbursement for particularly expensive operations must be approved by the government on a case-by-case basis. The London hospital said the surgery and Brooke's post-operative care will cost $16,000. Matthews faces up to 20 years imprisonment if convicted. Prosecutors told the court Matthews used a shotgun to hold up the restaurant and escaped with the equivalent of $1,400. Trial was scheduled for next month in the County Court and his $700 bail was continued.

A hospital spokesman, Jonathan Street, said Brooke was "doing very well" on Tuesday. "She is now off the ventilator. Generally, things are looking good at the moment" The hospital said she was "making good transplant. A hospital right side of day said birth from with almost Brooke "had suffered since a complex heart defect complete absence of the the heart.
