Howe Tucker NEW LONDON Former New London resident Alice J. Tucker, 85, died Monday morning at Crestwood Care Center in Shelby after an extended illness. She was born May 29, 1906, in rural New London, the daughter of John and Bertha Howe, both now deceased.

Mrs. Tucker had lived in the New London area until 1988, when she moved to Ashland. She had lived in Shelby for the past six months. Mrs. Tucker attended the Trinity Baptist Church in Ashland.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Keefer of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, and Coletta Howell of Mansfield; six grandchildren; five great-granddhil-dren; a step-great-granddaughter; and a brother, Gilbert Howe of Fremont. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Tucker, in 1988; two brothers and a sister. Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Fitchville Cemetery by the Rev.

Surviving are her husband of 15 years, William Ferber; three daughters, Tamra Ferriman Taylor of Medina, and Elizabeth Ferber and Ruth Ferber, both at home; one son, Jeffrey Ferriman of New London; two grandchildren; four stepgrand-children; one stepdaughter, Michele Hess of New London; two stepsons, William Ferber of Nova and John Ferber of New London; her mother, Anna Beam Pay of New London; a sister, Mary Roberts of Wellington; four brothers, Earl Pay of Wellington, Carl Pay of Nankin, Alva Pay of Nova and Jerry Pay of Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her father, Walker Pay; two brothers; and one sister.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Eastman Funeral Home in New London, where services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Doug Lang, associate minister of the New London Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. Burial will be in Grove Street Cemetery in New London.

Fourth St. sometime between Saturday at 8:30 p.m and Sunday, according to the Ontario Police Department. The case is under investigation and no further details were available.

10 block of Swanger Avenue, Mansfield An 18-year-old resident was issued a court summons after he allegedly shot a kitten with a BB rifle from a bedroom window Monday about 7 p.m., according to Mansfield police. The man told police he was target shooting when the kitten got in the line of fire. However, a neighbor said the man had threatened to shoot the kitten because the animal was on the his porch, police said. The gun was confiscated and the kitten was treated by a veterinarian. Park Avenue Baptist Church, Mansfield A Bible school teacher had her wallet containing $26 and some credit cards stolen from her purse while she taught at the 296 Park Avenue West church Monday about 10:30 a.m., according to police.

Second St. died Monday morning at Mansfield General Hospital after becoming ill at her home. She was born Aug. 31, 1938, in Wooster and was a resident of Ashland County most of her life. She was a part-time employee of Progress Industries and had attended the Steele Avenue Church of Christ in Ashland.

Survivors include a daughter, Tina Carpenter of Ashland; two grandchildren; her father, William L. Funk of Jeromesville; and a sister, Karen Funk of Houston, Texas. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Baucher Funk. Calling hours will be one hour prior to funeral services, which will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Den-bow-Primm Funeral Home in Ashland by Thomas McFadden.

24, 1969, in Wil-lard and spent most of her life in the New Washington area. She was a caregiver at the KinderNest Child Development Center in Willard and was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in New Washington. Surviving are her husband, Bradley Baxter; a daughter, Clair at home; her parents, William and Rose Fenner Heydinger of New Washington; three brothers, Mark Heydinger and Kevin Heydinger, both of New Washington, and Steve Heydinger of Norwalk; three sisters, Cheryl Rietschlin of Crestline, Beth Hass of New Washington and Patti Cok of Willard. "We had 45 percent of the kids pass all areas, so next year the real push will be for the 24 percent who passed all but one area," he said. Turson said Plymouth then would have 70 percent of the high school students passing all four tests.

Students in the class of 1994 must pass the proficiency tests in order to graduate. The four areas tested are writing, reading, math' and citizenship. She was preceded in death by her father, Bill Sunderland and a son, Roger Allen Hamilton. Evelyn I. Sycks Bailey MARION Evelyn I. Bailey, 77, of 460 Kensington Place died Monday morning in Columbus Riverside Methodist Hospital after a short illness. She was born Nov.

8, 1913, in Denmark, Ohio, to H. Burl and Pearl Griffin Sycks, both now deceased. She was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Delta Theta Tau sorority in Marion and the Child Conservation League. Surviving are her husband, Howard L. "Skin" Bailey, whom she married June 13, 1937, in Ada; two sons, Pete Bailey of Mansfield and Douglas Bailey of West Palm Beach, a sister, Ruth Seeley of Essex, and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Sycks. Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Denzer-Fari-son-Hottinger Funeral Home in Marion, where services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Marion Cemetery. Gladys Etta Garretson Johnson MANSFIELD Former Mans-fielder Gladys Etta Johnson, 77, of 1250 31st Parkersburg, W. died Friday in Camden Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg. She was the sister of Edith McCormick of Mansfield. Born Jan. 22, 1914, In Calhoun County, W.

she was the daughter of the late Robert L. and Mabel Dawson Garretson. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Stout Memorial United Methodist Church in Parkersburg and retired from Nancarrows Drug Stores. She was a member of the Eastern Star Roth Chapter 17 of Mansfield, White Shrine of Jerusalem and Naomi Shrine 10 of Mansfield.

Also surviving are a son, Jerald Johnson of Columbus; a daughter, Jeannie Johnson of Parkersburg; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Denver Garretson of Anmoore, W. Va, and Gordon Garretson of Glenville, W. and two other sisters, Mildred Mets of Jacksonville, and Virginia Cooper of Moore, Okla. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Truett Johnson.

10, 1924. Incorrect information was supplied to the News Journal. U.S. spelling bee has new director CINCINNATI (AP) The Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee has a new director. Reta Rose, 55, a former middle school language arts and social studies teacher, was named to the position.

She has been co-director of the bee since 1986. The yearly competition is sponsored by 221 newspapers and involves more than 9 million Possum Run MANY IN-SHOP SPECIALS! coming back to the school until they pass. At least 60 percent of the Plymouth students passed in each of the four areas, he said. Plymouth had only four students or 5 percent who did not pass any areas of the test. Each area has several categories, and a student must pass all of the categories in order to pass the test.

The problem is that the scores don't show how well the students did in each area, Turson said, or how close they were to passing. Next year, he said, there will be a teacher who will do nothing but help the students prepare for the test. Superintendent Jeff Slauson said he was pleased with the proficiency test results, especially the math results, which were the highest in the county.
