News Journal, Mansfield, a Sunday, May 2, 1982, 10-c sports Digest Allard sent to minors NEW YORK (AP) Brian Allard, who has not pitched since the first half of the 1981 season because of a stress fracture in his right elbow, has been assigned to the Seattle Mariners' Salt Lake team of the Pacific Coast League, the team announced Saturday night. Salt Lake Manager Bobby Floyd will try to work Allard into the rotation on May 4 or May 7, the club said. The 24-year-old right-hander will be with Salt Lake on the 20-day Rehabilitation Option Program. Allard was one of the Mariners top pitchers in the first half of last year, posting a 3-2 mark. Withdraws from conference JONESBORO, Ark.

(AP) The University of Southwestern Louisiana withdrew from the six-member Southland Conference Saturday. Southwestern Louisiana will compete the remainder of the spring season. Faculty representatives voted unanimously to give the university its share of the league's liquid assets when the fiscal year ends June 30. The amount is contingent upon league receipts from the NCAA basketball tournament. SW Louisiana, which is to participate in NCAA Division I-A football, could not adhere to a 75-scholarship limitation imposed on Division IAA schools.

SLC members Arkansas State, Mc Neese State, Louisiana Tech, Texas-Arlington and Lamar dropped to Division I-AA under the NCAA's reorganization. Division LA has a 95-scholarship limit. Southwestern Louisiana joined the league 11 years ago. Tennis victory GRENELEFE, Fla. (AP) Top-seeded Martina Navratilova turned away Australia's Wendy Turnbull 6-3, 7-5 Saturday to win the 6200,000 United Airlines Tournament of Champions.

She collected 650,000 for the 70-minute victory. Summer T-ball program MANSFIELD The Mansfield YMCA will offer an instructional Tball program for youths ages 6 through 8 this summer. The program will begin the week of June 13 and run through the week of July 18. Basic baseball skills batting, fielding and throwing will be taught to the participants so that they will be better prepared for the competitive level of play as 9 and 10 year olds. The program will consist of six 1 111 -hour sessions.

To ease transportation problems, the program will be held at four different locations on Monday through Thursday. The day, location and time for the first session of each day include: 10 a.m. Monday at Hamilton Park; 10 a.m. Tuesday at Prospect Park; 10 a.m. Wednesday at Appleseed Park; 10 a.m.

Thursday at Maple Lake Park. Fridays will be used for make-up sessions that are postponed due to bad weather. Registration will be at the YMCA on Saturday, May 15, and Saturday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A $12 fee must be paid at this time.

The fee includes a T-shirt for each child and also provides all the equipment needed, except for gloves. Parents are welcome to attend any or all of the instructional sessions. For further information, contact Jim Battisti at 522-3511 or Geoff Frantz at 522-5300. I)ailey turning pro SAN FRANCISCO (AP) All-America junior guard Quintin Dailey, who faces a trial for an alleged sexual assault, has written to the National Basketball Association requesting he be included on the eligible list for the league's draft next month. Dailey, 6-foot-3, will pass up his final season of elibility with the University of San Francisco Dons to turn professional, he told the San Francisco Chronicle.

"I'm not running away from anything," Dailey said. "I had pretty much made my mind ap about halfway through the season, and this (the assault charge) didn't flare up until a little while ago." Dailey, accused of assaulting a USF nursing student in her dormitory room Dec.21, is scheduled to stand trial next month. The NBA draft is June 29. The 21-year-old Dailey's attorney, George Walker, said he didn't believe the trial would affect Dailey's chances of playing in the pros next season. Dailey is leaving USF with a 20.5 scoring average for his three-year career.

He averaged 25.2 points and 5.2 rebounds in 30 games this past season. Lend', Vilas meet MADRID, Spain (AP) Ivan Lend' of Czechoslovakia, the No.1 seed, and second-seeded Guillermo Vilas of Argentina will meet Sunday in the finals of the $200,000 week-long Volvo Grand Prix of Madrid tennis tournament after scoring victories in their semifinal matches Saturday. Lendl defeated Spain's Manuel Orantes, the tournament's fourth seed, 6-4, 6-4 in a match which lasted 110 minutes. Vilas needed 95 minutes to stop third-seeded Yannick Noah of France 7-6, 6-2. Golfers shine BOWLING GREEN A pair of Mansfielders did well for Ohio Univerity in the Bowling Green Golf Invitational which concluded Saturday.

Ohio University placed third overall, helped by former Lexington High School standouts Tom Kyff and Greg Weidig. Kyff shot a two round score of 72-76-148 for eighth place and Weidig was 10th with a 74-75-149 showing. Oakland From Page I-C inning when he felt "a sharp pain" in his right elbow while pitching to A's speedster Rickey Henderson. The righthander immediately headed toward the dugout after waving for Manager Dave Garcia and Tom Brennan was summoned post haste and given unlimited warmup time. Oakland had already scored two runs in the second inning on Heath's sacrifice fly and Dave McKay's RBI single, and they had the bases full when Blyleven went to a 3-0 count on Henderson.

Brennan completed the walk to Henderson on his first pitch, forcing in the third run, then Murphy sent the fourth run home with a sacrifice fly. Brennan actually retired the first II batters before the A's punctured his armor in the sixth inning with three runs, starting with Wayne Gross' first home run this season. Before Ed Whitson came in to spell Brennan, Jeff Burroughs beat out an infield hit, Heath drilled a triple to left scoring pinch-runner Jimmy Sexton and he scored on McKay's single. Whitson shut the door until the ninth when swift Rickey Henderson singled, stole second and third on Mike Fisch lin who had replaced Bando behind the plate, and scored on a single by Gross. Jones, 2-3, gave up two runs in the third inning when Miguel Di lone lashed the first of his two hits and scored on a triple by Toby Harrah.

Blyleven, 2-2, saw his earned run average soar to 4.88, which, under the circum stances, seems very unimportant at this time.

He gave up three hits, walked three and didn't register a strikeout. The clubhouse prankster, who received a further scare while icing his sore elbow when the clubhouse dryer caught fire, never had arm trouble until last September when he encountered tendinitis in the right elbow. This spring he was out of action for a considerable time with forearm muscle problems indirectly related to his elbow trouble. However, he had pitched two very strong games this season, and had 19 strikeouts in 19 innings. Oakland, the major league base stealing leaders, stole four bases yesterday, and three came with Fisch lin catching.

They now have stolen 46 of 58 attempts. League leader Henderson pilfered two to run his season total to 24. Rick Manning, the Tribe's biggest base thief, stole his seventh. The Indians are now three games below .500 at 8-11 while the A's moved one game over .500 at 12-11 as they attempt to regain the American League West lead from the hot California Angels, the Tribe's next opponent here Monday night. Di lone, who has been in a hitting slump, had two of the Tribe's nine hits, along with Hargrove and Manning also collecting a pair of hits.
