By Ron Simon Newt Journal According to its contract with the drivers, the district allows them recall benefits for two years based on seniority, or up to Jan. 6, 1994. Ontario counselors to help survivors ONTARIO The library at Ontario High School will be temporarily open today at 1 p.m. so that students may meet with counselors to talk about the recent death of Meredith R.

Haber, 15, an Ontario sophomore. She was one of three teen-age girls who drowned when their pickup truck flipped into the Black Fork on Friday night. High School Principal Brian Neff said it is a bad time of the year for students or close friends to have to deal with the tragedy since the school is closed for the holidays. For those who need to talk, help will be avaible through the afternoon, Neff said. Suspending the driver contracts could save the district $20,000 between now and June, according to Superintendent Fred Slater.

Slater said unemployment compensation for the drivers keeps the move from showing very substantial savings for the district this year. Should the district keep busing at the same minimums for a full school year without unemployment pay for laid-off drivers, the savings would amount to $100,000 plus, Slater said. On top of that, the district plans to close the Lincoln Elementary School at the end of this school year, a move that could result in an additional savings of $500,000. All of these moves are in response to five straight levy defeats, the latest coming last month.
