News Journal, Mansfield, O. Friday, February 28, 1992 io-a Obituaries Joyce K. Palmer Shackle MOUNT VERNON Joyce K. Shackle, 74, of 8750 Columbus Road died Wednesday at the Northside Manor Living Center. The daughter of the late John I.

Laurence Russell ASHLAND Laurence Russell, 91, of 110 Samaritan Ave. died at Ashland Manor Nursing Home on Thursday morning. He was born in Ashland on Nov. 25, 1960, the son of John Harvey and Bertha Pershing Russell. Mr.

Russell studied architecture at the Ohio State University and worked for a Mansfield firm for eight years after college. During the 1930s, he worked with the Ohio Department of Transportation as a bridge engineer on design and construction. On June 1, 1926, he was married to Rhea Rounds, who preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 1976. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Eugene, in 1966.

-On March 1, 1939, he opened his first office in Ashland in the Farmer's Bank Building. During his 50 years of practice as an architect, he worked on more than 90 projects in Ashland, Mansfield and Wooster. Some of his projects included the Ashland Municipal Building, the YMCA in Ashland, Edison and Taft Schools, Dale Roy School, Ashland Community Stadium, the Ashland University campus Founders Hall, the Student Union, Kettering Science building, the library, several Ashland factory buildings, the First Federal Savings and Loan buildings in Woo-; ster, Ashland, Medina and Mansfield, and numerous private residences in; Ashland. Mr. Russell was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ash-i land, where he was a former clerk of session and former trustee; a 32nd degree Mason and a 67-year member of Ashland Masonic Lodge 151; and a member of Ashland chapter 67, Ash-! land council 128, the Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, the Scottish Rite Association of Ashland County, the Al Koran Shrine of Cleveland and Ash- land County Shrine Club.

His professional memberships included the Architect Society of Ohio, Northeast Ohio Engineering Society and the American institute of Architects. For more than 30 years he was a director of the board of trustees of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association. Surviving is his daughter, Mary Weber of Manlius, N.Y.; three grand- children; and three great-grandchil- I dren. Calling hours are Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dembow-Primm Funeral Home of Ashland.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland by the Rev. Rich- ard Boyer. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery. Harley E.

Saiter GALION Harley E. Saiter, 80, of 710 Clay St. died Tuesday at the Alter-Care Nursing Home in Bucyrus. He was a patient at the home for 21 Va years, suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. Born in Morrow County on Sept.

13, 1911, he was co-owner of Ann's Hat Shop. He also was in the shoe business since 1937, when he opened the first Merit Shoe Store in Galion. Saiter is survived by his wife, Mary Nicklas Saiter, whom he married July 31, 1940; two step-children; a sister, Ruth Hinaman of Marion; five step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Eva Saiter; and two brothers. Private graveside services will be held Monday in the Marion City Cemetery by the Rev.

Paul Bass. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Foundation, care of the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home in Galion. Horst Boelker MANSFIELD Horst Boelker, 63. of 1065 Elizabeth Ave.

died unexpectedly Wednesday at home. He was born May 27, 1929, in Berlin, Germany, and had lived in Mansfield since May of 1965. Mr. Boelker retired on Oct. 1, 1989 from General Motors CPC.

He was a resident of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada from 1955-1965. He was a member of Mansfield Liederkranz and UAW 549. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Bruce Minich of Mansfield and Elizabeth "Betty" and Dave McMullen, also of Mansfield; two granddaughters, Jessica and Cali Minich; and his parents, Arthur and Anna Fiebig of Schwet-zingen, Germany. He was preceded in death by his wife, Magda, in 1988. Private funeral services will be held at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors by the Rev.

Carl Cunfer. Burial will be in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or American Heart Association. F. Marie Brecheisen Etzwiler LOUDONVILLE F.

Marie Etzwiler, 88, of 223 W. Campbell St. died Thursday evening in Colonial Manor Health Care Center No. 1 after a long illness. She was born Aug.

7, 1903, in Holmes County, the daughter of the late John L. and Cora Sprang Brecheisen. She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ and a past member of Hanover Grange. She had been a distributor for Wat-kins Products since 1948. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Jerry Etzwiler of Ashland; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy M.

and Peter Zook of Lakeworth, and Donna M. and Lawrence Spreng of Perrysville; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Howard Brecheisen of Loudonville and Ralph and Carl Brecheisen, both of Perrysville; and three sisters, Minnie Rogers and Lula Huffer, both of Loudonville, and Helen Robinson of Perrysville. Her husband. Everett Etzwiler, died Jan. 3, 1985, and a granddaughter, Lyndale Marie Etzwiler, in 1978.

She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Weirick, Ruth Brecheisen and Ada McDoo, and a brother, Elmer Brecheisen. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Byerly Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Trinity United Church of Christ by the Rev.

James Bennett. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Perrysville. Memorial contributions may be made to her church. Maxwell George Atkinson MANSFIELD Former Mansfield resident Maxwell George Atkinson, 76, died suddenly Sunday at the Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia. Surviving are his wife, the former Larae Bennett Hambenne Atkinson, and two sons, Dr.

William Atkinson of Philadelphia and R. James Atkinson of Hemmet, Calif. Funeral services were private at the convenience of the family. Sheidler and Lois and Randy Sensi-baugh, all of Lucas, Sherry and Gary Holbrook of Chico, Gayle and Larry Bosko of Powell, Roberta and Ron Harvey of Mansfield and Lisa and Dan Psimer of Cleveland; a daughter, Carolyn Cockley of Mans-, field; a son, Joel Wagner of Tacoma, 17 grandchildren; a greatgrandchild; three sisters, Kathryn Meyers and Betty Miller, both of Florida, and Theresa Zavier of Des Plaines, and a number of nieces and nephews. Richard Joseph Dorner MANSFIELD Richard Joseph Dorner, 67, of 799 Pulver List Road died Thursday morning at Mansfield General Hospital after an extended illness.

Mr. Dorner was born April 15, 1924, in Mansfield, living in the Mansfield area all of his life. A former employee of Westinghouse Electric, Mr. Dorner was a member of Mayflower Congregational Church and was a veteran of World War II, serving in Pacific Theater as a radio operator with the U.S. Navy.

Surviving are two brothers, Robert A. Dorner of Mansfield and Ralph T. Dorner of Bellville; three sisters, Eva Gonshirski, Mary E. Berentz and Eleanor M. Davies, all of Mansfield; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Erndt Dorner. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, where services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at by the Rev. Carl Cunfer.

Military services will be held at Mansfield Cemetery. Lee Logan Gregory MANSFIELD Lee Logan Gregory, 82, of White Bluff, uncle of Mansfielders Lydia Reid and Joe Reeder, died Thursday in Goodlark Medical Center in Dickson, Tenn. Other survivors include his wife, Maxine Wilson Gregory; four sons, Sam Gregory of Hurricane Mills, Wade Gregory of Lyles, Rick Gregory of Kingston Springs, and Noah Gregory of White Bluff; three daughters, Linda Canada of White Bluff, Barbara Washburn of Nashville, and Wanda Hatfield of Dickson, 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and another nephew, Albert Perry of Grand Rapids, Mich. Funeral services were to be held this morning at the Taylor Funeral Home in Dickson, by the Rev. Newton Baggett.

Additional services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Globe Funeral Home in Olive Hill, Ky. Burial will be in Garvin Ridge Cemetery in Olive Hill. Robert L. Bachtel, Jr.

MANSFIELD Robert L. Bachtel, 70, of 149 Dawson Ave. died at the Cleveland Clinic on Wednesday evening after a four-month illness. Mr. Bachtel was born Sept.

20, 1921, in Newton Hamilton, the son of Robert L. Sr. and Mary Aurand Bachtel, both now deceased. He had been a resident of the Mansfield area most of his life. He was employed with the Mansfield Sewer Department, retiring in 1987.

He attended the Diamond Hills Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving at Guadalcanal. Surviving are his wife, Alice W. MacCombs Bachtel; a daughter, Kathy Jo Bachtel, of the home; a brother, Richard Bachtel; and a stepbrother, Jack Cunningham. Calling hours will be today from 7 to 9 p.m.

at the Finefrock Funeral Home, where services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Christopher Thomas, pastor of the Diamond Hills Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Nelsonville. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Clyde F. Clark SHELBY Clyde F. Clark, 101, Joseph A. Wagner LUCAS Funeral services for Joseph A. Wagner, 73, of 2664 Stout Road will be held Saturday at 1 p.m.

at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors by the Rev. Nolan Steiner. Burial will be in Oddfellows Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Calling hours will be today from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

at the funeral home. Mr. Wagner died Wednesday afternoon in Cleveland Clinic after a brief illness. Born Jan. 1, 1919, in Chicago, he lived in the Mansfield area most of his life.

He was retired from Allen Knapp Corp. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Jean McCune Wagner; six daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Tom and Ethel Workman Palmer was born Sept. 14, 1917, in Canton and lived in Knox County since 1945. Mrs. Shackle was a former employee of the Lifer and Workman T.urkey Farms, the U.S.

Postal Service and United Telephone Co. She was a member of First Christian Church in Canton and the American Association of Retired Persons. Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Cecil H. Shackle; two sons, Donald Shackle of Mount Vernon and Ronald Shackle of Danville; two sisters, Doris Baker of Arizona and June Shankle of Canton; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be today from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

at Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Larry G. Deitch. Burial will be in Brinkhaven Cemetery.

Charles Edward Babcock PLYMOUTH Charles Edward Babcock, 73, of St. Louis, died Feb. 18 after a long illness at Veterans Hospital in St. Louis. He was born April 7, 1918, in Plymouth, to Dr.

Carl W. and Lettie Babcock and graduated in 1937 from Plymouth High School. He is survived by his wife, Helen Rotruck Babcock of St. Louis, his daughter-in-law, Barbra Rotruck of Genoa, Ohio; two sisters, Ida Mae FitzGerald of Shelby, Laura Lee of Plymouth, and his sister-in-law, Mar-cella Babcock of Plymouth; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a step-son, Robert Rotruck; and a brother, Raymond Babcock.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion Post No. 447 in Plymouth and the American Legion in St. Louis, and Lodge No. 1 which conducted Blue Lodge services Feb.

21 at 10:30 a.m. Services were held Feb. 21 at 12:30 p.m. at Kriegshauser Funeral Home in St. Louis.

Burial was in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Ted Roberts BUCYRUS Ted Roberts, 84, of 609 Dudley St. died Wednesday at 8:55 a.m. at Bucyrus Community Hospital. He was born on Nov.

14, 1907, in Blairs the son of William and Josephine McAllister Roberts, both now deceased. He worked as a coal miner in West Virginia before retiring in 1950 and moving to Bucyrus. He then worked for Fisher Body in Mansfield, retiring from there in 1964. He was a member of the Church of God in Bucyrus, the United Mine Workers of America and the United Auto Workers. Roberts is survived by his wife, Geneva L.

Fowler Roberts; three daughters, Helen Wagner of Thousand Oaks, Millie Logan of Bucyrus and Linda Shifflett of Virginia Beach, a son, Harold Roberts of Bucyrus; two sisters, Bessie Sexton of Michigan and Nellie Jennings of Kentucky; two brothers, Wade Roberts of Michigan and Allie Roberts of Galion; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home, where services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Crawford County Memory Gardens.

He was a member of the First United Church of Chirst, where he had been a member of the choir and was financial secretary for many years. He was also a member of the former Knights of Pythias Lodge in Shelby and a member of the Shelby Masonic Lodge No. 350 He was the oldest living member of the Royal Arch Masons of Ohio.

He had owned and operated the former Clark and Shriver Shoe Store and had been employed at the former Wilkins Air Force Depot, retiring from there in 1955. He also worked for a time at the former American Machine Foundry plant. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Henry C. and Virginia Clark of Shelby; two grandsons, Keith D. Clark of Mansfield and David H.

Clark of Brea, two granddaughters, Patricia A. Laubie and Cynthia A. Clark, both of Placentia, four great-grandchildren; a cousin, Dr. John Clark of San Diego, a step-son, Mark D. Lowmiller of Shelby; four step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Francis Markley Lowmiller Clark in 1986. Services will be held Saturday at 1 1 a.m. at the Barkdull Funeral Home by the Rev. John J. Bradley, his pastor.

Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to services.
