Miss Dix devoted her life to helping these unfortunate people by persuading state legislatures to build mental hospitals for them. Dorothea Dix was born on April 4. in Hampden.

Maine. She became a teacher and later opened her own school for girls. In 1841 she agreed to teach a Sunday school class in a Massachusetts jail. Slie discovered that insane people were kept in the jail in a room without heat. She protested to the authorities and then spent the next two years investigating the treatment of the insane in jails and pooriiouses throughout the state.

Mentally ill people were kept, chained and caged. Often they were beaten by their keepers. Miss Dix appealed to newspapers and public officials for help. With their assistance she convinced the Massachusetts legislature to provide money for mental hospitals. For the next Hi years Dorothea Dix continued her work throughout the United Stales.

She traveled thousands of miles pleading with state officials to improve their treatment of the insane. Hecause of her work, new hospitals were built, or old ones improved in many states. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Miss Dix offered her services as a nurse. During the four years of the war she served as of women nurses. After peace came, she returned to her work for menial hospitals.

She continued to travel and work until she was 8(1. She died at the age. of 85 on July 17, 1887. How was I a to avoid the spade rulf? Svarc reasoned that the chances were good that the heart finesse would fail, so an immediate heart finesse was out of the question since East might well have the diamond ace (the actual easel.

West had started with three hearts? The scissors coup was the answer. East's entry had been denied and West could no longer get a spade ruff.

Svarc ruffed West's diamond continuation and then played the ace and queen hearts. West won but could do no better than return another diamond which Svarc ruffed. The last trump was a and the hand claimed. Send bridge questions to The Aces, P.O. Rox Dallas, Texas 7.VJ25.
